Removable Retainers

After the active orthodontic appliances are removed, patients receive retainers to maintain dental correction. As the bone and soft tissues surrounding the teeth stabilize over several months post-braces, wearing retainers as instructed is crucial. Failure to do so may result in undesirable tooth movement, possibly requiring re-treatment.

How Retainers are Worn:

Because teeth can continue to move throughout life, individuals who have undergone orthodontic therapy should wear retainers indefinitely. Initially, wear retainers full-time for one year following the removal of braces.

After about a year, transition to wearing the retainer only at night. This allows wisdom teeth to develop naturally without affecting the smile’s alignment. Dr. Thomas Forrest will monitor wisdom teeth every six to nine months, with an X-ray taken every one and a half years.

Once the wisdom teeth situation is stabilized, wear the retainer at least one night per week. This prevents teeth from shifting due to tightening facial muscles as you age.

How to Care for Retainers

  • Retainers are made of sensitive thermoplastic material, so avoid exposing them to temperatures above 115 degrees (Fº).
  • Store retainers in their case when not in use to prevent damage, especially from pets.
  • Clean retainers before and after use with a toothbrush and mild soap to remove plaque. Use denture cleaning solutions like Efferdent for a thorough cleaning, ensuring that you rinse well afterward.
  • Periodically replace retainers as recommended in your treatment contract after braces removal. Neglect or damage may incur replacement charges. Contact our office promptly if retainers become loose or break.

Fixed Retainers (Bonded Wire)

Fixed retainers are designed for long-term use unless hygiene issues arise:

  • Maintenance: The wire should ideally remain indefinitely unless advised otherwise by your family dentist due to hygiene concerns causing gum or bone problems.
  • If necessary, replace it with a removable retainer as prescribed by Dr. Forrest. This ensures continued teeth protection as facial muscles tighten with age.
  • Regular monitoring at six-month dental check-ups helps maintain the wire’s effectiveness.

Habits or Conditions that Require Stronger Retention

Identify and address factors that may affect retainer effectiveness:

Factors Affecting Retention:

  • Address habits such as mouth breathing, teeth grinding, and tongue thrusting.
  • Manage conditions like lip-sucking and pen or pencil biting.
  • Monitor pre-existing conditions like tooth spacing or severe tooth rotation.
