Early Orthodontics

At What Age Should a Child First Visit the Pediatric Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that most children have an orthodontic screening by age 7. This early visit allows

Dr. Thomas Forrest will determine if and when orthodontic treatment will be needed. Many local dentists are trained to spot orthodontic issues early and may refer your child to our office even before age 7.

Why are Children Evaluated at Such an Early Age

Early diagnosis and treatment can:

  • Guide erupting teeth into better positions
  • Preserve space for permanent teeth
  • Reduce the risk of fracturing protruding front teeth

If early treatment is indicated, Dr. Forrest can:

  • Guide jaw growth and incoming permanent teeth
  • Regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches
  • Create space for permanent teeth
  • Avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions
  • Reduce the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth
  • Correct thumb sucking
  • Eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems

Early treatment can simplify later treatment after all the permanent teeth have erupted.

Does Early Orthodontic Treatment Benefit All Children?

Not all children benefit from early treatment. Some orthodontic problems are easier to correct in the teen years when all permanent teeth have emerged. Certain skeletal issues should be addressed when growth is more advanced or complete. Our doctors create individualized treatment plans based on each child’s needs. If a child is not ready for treatment, they are placed in our Orthodontic Supervisory Program.

What is the Orthodontic Supervisory Program?

The Orthodontic Supervisory Program is for patients who are not yet ready for treatment. It allows us to monitor the pattern of permanent teeth eruption. Early removal of baby teeth can sometimes correct poor eruption patterns and reduce future braces treatment time.

We notify your general dentist of any recommendations made during your visit. We typically see these patients every 6-8 months to track their progress. There is no fee for this program, and it helps determine the optimal time to begin treatment for the best results.

In Addition to a Beautiful New Smile, What Are the Other Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment?

Braces can:

  • Improve bite function
  • Enhance the ability to clean teeth
  • Prevent excessive wear on teeth
  • Increase the longevity of natural teeth over a lifetime

If a Child Has Early Treatment, Will This Prevent the Need for Braces for Kids As An Adolescent?

Early treatment can:

  • Begin correcting significant issues
  • Prevent more severe problems from developing
  • Simplify future treatment

Since all permanent teeth haven’t erupted during early treatment, final alignment might not be fully corrected. A shortened comprehensive phase of treatment (Phase II – full braces) in the teen years usually completes the correction. In some cases, further orthodontic treatment may not be necessary.

Do We Still Need to See Our Family Dentist During Orthodontic Treatment?

Yes, patients with braces and other orthodontic appliances need to maintain excellent oral hygiene. We recommend regular check-ups and cleanings with your family dentist every 6 months during orthodontic treatment to ensure the highest level of dental health.
